I’ve Been on GLP-1 for 6 Months. I Wish I’d Known This on Day One.

Written by: Ana Reisdorf, MS, RD April 14, 2026

I’m a registered dietitian on a GLP1, and even I got this wrong.

When I first started GLP-1, the weight came off faster than I expected. Within a few months, I had lost about 30 pounds with what felt like minimal effort. For the first time, the healthy habits I had built over the years were finally showing up on the scale.

Like most people, I assumed that meant I was doing everything right.

But a few months in, my kid asked why my arms were suddenly jiggly. I was also tired a lot. My workouts felt harder. I had less motivation to train. I was smaller… but I didn’t feel stronger.

At the time, I couldn’t quite explain it. But after being on this journey for a while, I now understand what I did wrong.

The Kind of Weight Loss No One Wants

GLP-1 medications are incredibly effective; they reduce appetite and make weight loss easier. That’s a big part of why they are such a game-changer for so many people.

But that same appetite suppression creates a problem that’s easy to miss. And even as a registered dietitian, I fell prey to this.

I was eating less, but I was also getting less of everything my body needed.

What I didn’t realize was that I was also slowly under-fueling my body, especially when it came to protein. And when protein drops too low, your body doesn’t just lose fat. It starts to lose muscle.

But over time, not only did my kid notice my arms had changed, I also had less strength, less definition, and less stability in my energy.

The scale was telling the story I had always wanted to hear, “You weigh less”. But my body was struggling and eating away at my lean muscle.

Muscle isn’t just about how you look. It’s what supports your metabolism, your strength, your energy, and how your body functions long-term.

When you lose muscle, your metabolism adapts. You burn fewer calories. And that makes it harder to maintain your weight, even on the medication.

This is where a lot of people get themselves in trouble. They lose the weight… but set themselves up to regain it.

When “Less Food” Starts Working Against You

In theory, the solution is simple. Eat more protein and strength train.

In reality, it’s not that easy. There were days I could barely finish a small meal.

When you’re eating less, you’re not just missing protein. You’re also missing fiber, key vitamins and minerals, and overall nutrition your body still needs.

Over time, this can lead to:

  •  low energy
  •  hair thinning
  •  feeling weaker
  •  and eventually, a plateau

And for many women, that’s where they start to think, “It’s no big deal if I can’t eat, if I don’t eat, I’ll lose more”. That’s when things start to fall apart.

What Finally Worked for Me

When I started noticing muscle loss, I realized I needed something that worked with my GLP-1 lifestyle. I needed to figure out how to better fuel my muscles without forcing down large meals or trying to out-discipline a suppressed appetite.

I tried adding protein shakes, but most of them weren’t enough. They gave me protein, but not the full nutritional support I was clearly missing.

That’s when I found Maeva.

And honestly, it felt like the first thing that actually made sense for how I was living on a GLP-1.

Why Maeva Is Different

Maeva isn’t just a basic protein shake.

It’s designed specifically for women on GLP-1 who are eating less, but still need to protect their muscle and overall health. It’s built around the specific gaps GLP-1 users experience: protein, fiber, and essential micronutrients.

Maeva combines:

  • High-quality protein to help you maintain muscle
  • Creatine to support strength, performance, and prevent that “weak” feeling in the gym
  • Fiber and probiotics for digestion and GLP-1 side effects like constipation and bloating
  • Key vitamins and minerals that GLP-1 users are most commonly deficient in
  • Collagen and biotin to help address hair thinning that often shows up later

So instead of just getting protein…you’re actually supporting your body in all the areas that tend to break down during weight loss.

This is where it really clicked for me; this wasn’t just another protein shake. Maeva is a complete nutrient-dense approach during a time when your intake is naturally limited, and every bite has to count.

The Difference I Felt

Once I started prioritizing my nutrition again by using Maeva daily, I noticed a shift fairly quickly.

My energy improved within just two weeks, and my workouts started to feel more manageable again. Over time, I felt stronger and more like I was actually supporting my body, not just shrinking it.

Since then, I’ve recommended Maeva to dozens of clients who are navigating the same challenges, and the feedback has been very similar.

"Two weeks in and my energy in the gym came back. I didn't realize how depleted I was until I wasn't anymore." — Rachel, 44, on Ozempic for 8 months

"The hair loss was the thing that scared me most. My ponytail is noticeably fuller now." — Michelle, 51, on Mounjaro

You’re on GLP-1 Right Now, Don’t Wait Until You Start Losing Muscle

If you’re currently on GLP-1 or thinking about starting, you need to be intentional about protein and overall nutrition.

That’s what makes the difference between just losing weight… and actually feeling strong, energized, and healthy long-term.

If I could go back, I would focus far less on the scale…and far more on protecting my muscle and supporting my body from the beginning.

Because the medication handles your appetite. But it does not handle nutrition.

If you’re on GLP-1 right now, don’t wait until you start feeling the effects of under-fueling. Every week without adequate protein is a week of muscle you may not get back
